You can make it as simple or sophisticated as you want. You can use up natural dyes and small amounts of plant material leftover from larger projects and use more or less any paper you can lay your hands on. </span><br />

<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Equipment</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Paper - this can be artist paper eg cartridge, watercolour or sketchbook: plain wallpaper aka lining paper, pages from old book, old envelopes, copy paper, repair tissue, kraft paper or thin card. In fact try anything that isn’t too thin or shiny. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Leaves and flowers - use the ones you know print well on fabric either because they have high tannin or give good colour. Leaves that have a good shape but are not good printers can be used as resists either tucked under a printer or when using a dye. Flowers especially daisy shaped ones work well. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Tiles or similar- I prefer to use leftover ceramic tiles cut to size to fit my fish kettle. However I know that Rita Summers aka Gone Rustic successfully uses heavy duty cardboard. Another method is to wrap the paper around a tin can but I find that the paper has a tendency to bend afterwards. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Bull dog clips or small clamps or string. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Vessel in which to simmer your tile bundle. Pan, Turkey roaster, fish kettle. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Spray bottle with 50/50 white vinegar and water. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Optional</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Dye of your choice. I usually use an exhausted bath after dyeing fabric. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Onion skins and </span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Avocado skins and stones can be useful for a dye </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Rusty iron objects for your bath</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The paper can be mordanted if you want a particular colour effect but generally as the life of a paper print isn’t that long compared to say a scarf I only spritz with the vinegar water. You could dip in alum to encourage greens or iron water to sadden and darken the prints as with the Acer print above. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">To achieve additional effects and colour I usually predye the paper in the examples below I used logwood but equally good are onion, weld, Brazil wood or avocado to name a few. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Method </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Place a piece of prepared paper on a tile. I rip the paper rather than cut for a more natural finish. Lay your chosen leaves on the paper, if you have predyed it is worth remembering to use a leaf that will either discharge the dye or act as a resist to give interesting shapes. In the examples above I have used Eucalyptus, Acer and Gingko to achieve these effects. Continue making sandwiches of paper, leaves, paper until you have several layers. Place the second ceramic tile on top and secure with bull dog clips or string. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Place in a pan of boiling water in which are some rusty nails or iron water. High tannin eucalyptus leaves will also help give the desired darkening effect of edges. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Paper needs to be simmered for an hour. After this time lift out of pan and wait until it cools sufficiently to handle. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Below is just before removing the leaves from the paper. If you have a stubborn leaf that is too soft to remove leave alone until bone dry and it will flick off easily. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Iron flat if necessary</span><br />

One such patch was the rhubarb bed. The original plants were over ten years old and this year they refused to produce any useable stalks. So up they came and after investigation the roots weren’t even suitable to split and replant they were rotten and woody. So the decision was made to replace with new and I got to chop up the ‘good’ bits for some natural dyeing. I had successfully made a mordant from leaves before but never used the roots. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">After cleaning, peeling and chopping they looked like this.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-084ysdhT5fc/Xqa1cP_4CrI/AAAAAAAAnOM/QvODbTn8ihQUekSytOWJjmZGpoVo4AmrQCEwYBhgL/s1600/5E8DDEFB-0182-4709-ACFB-536ED5164E1C.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-084ysdhT5fc/Xqa1cP_4CrI/AAAAAAAAnOM/QvODbTn8ihQUekSytOWJjmZGpoVo4AmrQCEwYBhgL/s640/5E8DDEFB-0182-4709-ACFB-536ED5164E1C.jpeg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Next it was time to consult Jenny Deans book ‘Wild Colour’. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The 600gms roots were brought to a simmer for 30 minutes. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Meanwhile I prepared my fabric. Animal fibres give the best results and although fabric does not require a mordant I chose to mordant my silk habotai and noil with Alum and Cream of Tartar. A piece of 50/50 silk wool mix was not mordanted. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The wetted fabric was dipped in the dye pots allowing plenty of room for movement of the fabric to ensure an even take up of the dye. The 1st extraction was unfortunately left unattended for enough time to boil which affects the colour changing from a bright yellow to a not unattractive mustard shade. For the second extraction I left the fabric to steep for 8 hours. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KJlFFTme3lE/Xqa7IQtIjjI/AAAAAAAAnO0/7AHbJyK5Y9o4TfjEzaWsgrw33FHoCQyggCEwYBhgL/s1600/B81C360D-2ACE-4400-A637-8FB038E76104.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="915" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KJlFFTme3lE/Xqa7IQtIjjI/AAAAAAAAnO0/7AHbJyK5Y9o4TfjEzaWsgrw33FHoCQyggCEwYBhgL/s640/B81C360D-2ACE-4400-A637-8FB038E76104.jpeg" width="364" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">This photograph shows the range of colours I achieved on silk habotai and silk georgette & net, the 4th example is the wool/silk mix. I made two extractions the colour diminishing with each one. Interestingly I was able to regain the brightness of yellow with the second extraction. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large; text-align: left;">The top two were dyed in an extraction from the leaves which were very small. I expected green but again I think they were heated too much. They are, however, a pleasing coffee colour. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Using iron as a post modifier produced the bottom two olive coloured samples. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">This photograph shows the results on silk noil. Similar comment as above. What an amazing set of colour variation. The one difference here was the piece that I had in my stash that had been previously mordanted in Titanium Oxide, third down, which gave a much deeper brighter yellow. For those who have used Titanium Oxide as a mordant you will know this effect. Again the top two are examples of rhubarb leaves dye but this time I dipped the second one in vinegar. </span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Whilst in Australia on our month’s trip, David sketched (@davidsteedenart on Instagram if you are interested) and I did some botanical printing with the local leaves.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The image below gives an indication of 4 of the results I achieved. I brought along with me some green tea teabags and ferrous sulphate powder. This allowed me to play around with strengths and combinations.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Top left is a white linen, no alum or AA mordant dipped in iron with a green tea kitchen towel blanket.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Top right is vintage Lancashire cotton, no alum or AA mordant dipped in iron with an kitchen towel green tea blanket. The leaves were soaked in vinegar.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Bottom left is silk noil no alum or AA mordant dipped in iron with a green tea kitchen towel blanket. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Bottom right is vintage linen no alum or AA mordant dipped in iron with a strong green tea kitchen towel blanket.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ztqs8oWgIOI/XlHYuDHuoUI/AAAAAAAAnGg/KJ2oaViySjECwHoLWwOSMqy2QTzVaPaUwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/83EB1903-04E3-4318-8F65-2615D4B59EF2.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1495" data-original-width="1600" height="596" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ztqs8oWgIOI/XlHYuDHuoUI/AAAAAAAAnGg/KJ2oaViySjECwHoLWwOSMqy2QTzVaPaUwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/83EB1903-04E3-4318-8F65-2615D4B59EF2.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Note how the results all vary. Due to varying fabrics, leaves used, length of time dipped, strength of dips. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">These four images below are of silk noil and like the above have no alum or AA mordant but they differ from the above in that they have been dipped in green tea and had a paper towel blanket dipped in iron. Note the ridged effect which came from the kitchen paper towel. I like it. </span></div>

Using paper in my botanical printing as a resist results in wonderful pieces of printed paper as a byproduct.<br />
In particular when printing flowers. Purple flowers, these were osteospermum, change to a pleasing blue.<br />

Bev choose this scarf that I printed from the material we collected from her garden.<br />
She was concerned that her neglected garden wouldn’t have sufficient suitable plants. They have been concentrating on renovating their house and the garden has taken a back seat recently. I assured her that it’s not alway the prettiest manicured plants that make the best marks and prints.<br />
We collected a selection of leaves and weeds from the country lane that borders her garden.<br />
She chose a 150x40cms habotai scarf and I went away to bundle.<br />
<br />
The best approach I felt was to print two mirror images of the same material so she had a choice.<br />
<br />
She chose the above which was the iron soaked scarf twin of a tannin soaked scarf. The high tannin leaves, stems and heads of weeds and plants have the deep purples and aubergine shades. The mesh effect of the Cotinus spent flower heads prints dark grey. Overall a delightful colour scheme.<br />
<br />
Bev’s comments say it all.<br />
“I am absolutely delighted and love Margaret’s creation”<br />
“Humble weeds they may be but they will captivate me for years”<br />
<br />
So all in all two happy bunnies!<br />

I wove strips of dyed silk noil to form a background for this painted helenium. The hand embroidery is done in my dyed threads and the helenium painted in Derwent Inktense watercolour pencils. They are vibrant high pigment pencils that once dry are fast.<br />

This scarf was a real surprise when I unbundled it. I originally dyed the silk twill in cochineal then picked some of the remaining Acer Griseum leaves before they all fall. To achieve the discharge I laid an iron blanket on the top of the leaves before bundling. It was steamed for two hours.Margaret Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16447640638776118326noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3720887118309688434.post-57011614416569983892017-11-16T10:24:00.002-08:002020-09-07T05:19:49.984-07:00Logwood and Redbud scarf<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My latest silk noil scarf, it was firstly scoured then mordanted with Alum and dyed with logwood. After allowing it to cure for a week I placed the redbud leaves in an 'artistic' line down one side. I thought a change from random placing was in order. After bundling around a wooden pole I steamed it for two hours. Because I used an iron blanket the leaves created a discharge shape as the iron reacted with the tannins in the leaves removing the dye. </div>

Each year during the warmer sunnier months I fill large glass jars with botanicals mordants water and a variety of textiles and threads. These sit on the window sills of my conservatory for months until they produce the colours I want. Second batches give paler shades. This gives me more threads than I need for my own use during the colder winter months when I do more hand sewing. I also wrap a range to go inside my inspiration packs. <a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RQVEnxWpeLM/Wgts_cXca6I/AAAAAAAAlL4/tiiLQA1f4pYGFkQPVr9Xh_8FETRT90zOQCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_1961.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="989" data-original-width="1600" height="197" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RQVEnxWpeLM/Wgts_cXca6I/AAAAAAAAlL4/tiiLQA1f4pYGFkQPVr9Xh_8FETRT90zOQCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_1961.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

Logwood and cochineal dyed silk noil. The range from dark to light is from the first dip to the last. The top piece is exhausted cochineal first then exhausted logwood second dip resulting in a lovely mauve. The plans for these lengths is to contact print some scarves. </div>

More logwood and Cochineal dyed pieces this time on silk habitat scarves and a silk lace collar that was in my late mother-in-laws fabric stash . This time I experimented with pre and post mordants of alum and iron. Once again these will be discharged with leaves <a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UyOGZMF0Orw/WgMqzG8FPiI/AAAAAAAAlLI/tIFRyetVR0w_VBbHY20Qr9QgIHhm5JcCwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_1779.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UyOGZMF0Orw/WgMqzG8FPiI/AAAAAAAAlLI/tIFRyetVR0w_VBbHY20Qr9QgIHhm5JcCwCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_1779.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

My latest set of botanical printed scarves. I predyed with natural dyes before contact dyeing.<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mfnpuHEsOdI/Wes1xywlAiI/AAAAAAAAlEc/bXZv9A5g2fcQyW2fTWkW_XIGm4fv1aqDQCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_1817.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mfnpuHEsOdI/Wes1xywlAiI/AAAAAAAAlEc/bXZv9A5g2fcQyW2fTWkW_XIGm4fv1aqDQCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_1817.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
This crepe de chine silk scarf was dyed with cochineal achieving a pale result before contact printing these lovely eucalyptus leaves. The resulting colour is a pleasing pinky grey.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jSwnca1KJPY/Wes1x2Bub0I/AAAAAAAAlEc/2ccLDcUfQI4CxuuHxBLOWCnK_0U9aL5xwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_1818.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jSwnca1KJPY/Wes1x2Bub0I/AAAAAAAAlEc/2ccLDcUfQI4CxuuHxBLOWCnK_0U9aL5xwCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_1818.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This crepe de chine scarf was predyed with logwood and then leaves from the same tree used this time they were not separated. The discharge effect this time is very dramatic.<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xXWVTkCLuAQ/Wes1xzW5CVI/AAAAAAAAlEc/wSOuMOocT3o4mWdj1Q3UsBTwc1Lejgm0wCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_1821.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xXWVTkCLuAQ/Wes1xzW5CVI/AAAAAAAAlEc/wSOuMOocT3o4mWdj1Q3UsBTwc1Lejgm0wCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_1821.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
